JIQ Boys’ Journal #23

As winter continues, the spiritual warmth and excitement at JIQ Boys’ Middle and High School only grow stronger. This past month, the school had the privilege of deepening its connection to mitzvot and to each other through two incredible highlights: an educational and inspiring trip to the Orthodox Union (OU) headquarters in Manhattan and beautiful Melave Malka gatherings hosted by our dedicated Rebbeim.

A Journey into Kashrut: OU Headquarters Trip

Led by Rabbi Leibowitz, students in 10th, 11th, and 12th grades were invited on a remarkable trip to the OU headquarters in Manhattan, where Torah learning met real-world halacha in a powerful and eye-opening way.

Accompanied by their Rebbeim and teachers, the boys were greeted by the esteemed Rabbanim of the OU, who gave thought-provoking and detailed presentations on the importance of kashrut, particularly when it comes to fish and seafood. The shiurim were engaging and filled with halachic insights and practical examples, helping the students see how Torah plays a vital role in the details of their everyday lives.

It was more than just a field trip—it was an opportunity to strengthen their appreciation for mitzvot, hear from leading halachic authorities, and ask meaningful questions in a professional Torah setting.

After the trip, the boys returned to school where they were treated to a well-earned pizza lunch, sponsored by the school in recognition of their active participation and sincere engagement throughout the day.

Melave Malkas with Our Rebbeim: Torah, Food, and Song

In addition to the OU trip, last month also featured something that has become a beloved JIQ tradition: Melave Malkas hosted by our Rebbeim.

After a long and rewarding Shabbat, boys from every grade were welcomed into the homes of their Rebbeim to continue the kedusha into Motzei Shabbat. With delicious food on the table, warm words of Torah, and spirited kumzitz-style singing, the Melave Malkas were a true highlight of the month.

These gatherings offered students something beyond the classroom—a chance to build personal relationships with their Rebbeim, ask questions, share laughs, and be part of the JIQ family in a deeper and more meaningful way.

As the school year continues, events like these remind us what makes JIQ so special: a balance of rigorous Torah learning, real-world application, strong Rebbe–talmid relationships, and a community that values both the spiritual and the social aspects of our boys’ growth.

Sponsorship opportunities are available, and Maaser money can be used.
